Relating genetic diversification and ecological traits at secondary contact: Hybrid zone and ecological speciation in a host-parasite-symbiont system

Department of Parasitology, (Hypša research groups), Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice announces openings of a PhD positions starting during 2022.

The project is focused on interaction among closely related lineages in secondary contact after their differentiation in glacial refugia. The model consists of a host (mice of the genus Apodemus), parasite (Polyplax lice), and the parasites ‘microbiomes. The aim of the project is using modern molecular approaches (population study with mapping SNPs, genomic comparisons, and identification of specific adaptations, amplicon analysis of microbiome structure) reveal structure and dynamics of the hybrid zone, evaluate role of the host specificity in genetic differentiation, compare structure of the microbiomes with genetic structure of the hosts and evaluate potential role of microbiomes as reproduction barrier.

 

We are looking for independent and motivated graduates of MSc programs in evolutionary biology, microbiology, parasitology, entomology, genomics, bioinformatics or related relevant field. Solid proficiency with standard molecular techniques is a must. Previous experience with bash, genomics or population genetics is preferred. Excellent English communication at both written and oral level is required.
